What Should I Use for My Wreath Form?
I like to use a polystyrene wreath form because they are the cheapest and simple to work with. Plus, I can often locate these at my local dollar store for just a few dollars.
You can also use a plastic or grapevine wreath form if you prefer. I like the foam ones because it is so simple to press the sections of denim down into the wreath. Of course, you can always go with making your own wreath form by carving out a circle of cardboard or plastic. Take a piece of durable cardboard, or position multiple layers cemented together, and cut it into a circle. Then carve out the inside circle. This creates a wreath form that you can use for nothing.
How to Make a Denim Rag Wreath
-
Begin by clipping the hem off the leg of a pair of outdated blue denim. Set this aside.
-
Then, clip the segments of denim out. You will need enough to encompass the front of the wreath form and around the perimeter. This would be anywhere from 50 to 100 segments, depending upon the size you choose to create. Start with 50 and make more if required.
-
Cut the segments 1" wide by 6" long. This is made simpler when you use a cutting mat and rotary blade but can be done with scissors.
-
Now, begin covering the wreath form with the denim pieces you cut. First, fold them in half and apply a dollop of adhesive to the outside fold.
-
Then, use the dowel rod, or something similar, to press the denim into the wreath form.
-
Repeat this process, continuing to press the denim sections into the form until the front and bottom/top edges are covered. You don't have to conceal the rear side if you are draping against a wall or door.
-
Once the wreath is completely covered, make the ribbons go on the side of the wreath. I began by stitching lace ribbon into a circle with a needle and thread. Sew it securely in the center to hold it into shape.
-
Repeat this process with the burlap ribbon until you have 2 to 3 bows in various sizes.
-
To the middle of each bow add a few of the micro fabric carnations.
-
Now, adhere those ribbons to the side of the wreath or as desired.
-
Add a piece of ribbon on the top to suspend or drape over a traditional metal door decoration if you have one in place.
What Is The Best Way to Cut Pieces of Denim Into Exact Sizes?
The easiest method to cut sections of denim into precise measurements is to use a rotary cutter. If you don’t have a rotary cutter, you can use a precise pair of fabric scissors.
Lay the denim level on a cutting surface, and then cut sections that are 1” wide and around 6" long. You can make your segments shorter or longer, depending on the size of your wreath form and if you are going to use my method or will encircle and connect the parts.
Another method to get the strips the same size, effortlessly, is to take a piece of cardboard and wind the denim strips around it. Then you cut down one side and then down the other side and that creates the strips all the same size.
Can I Use Other Things to Decorate The Front of This Wreath?
Yes! You can use anything you like to embellish the front of this wreath. Buttons, fragments of fabric, ribbon, or even a colorful brooch would look wonderful. I adore the concept of using ribbon and lace to create little bouquets, but you can do anything you want.
Another idea to embellish the fabric wreath is to use additional segments of denim to create a bow. Or you could use any ribbon with a wire edge to construct a bow.
I adore denim and lace together, so I often use both to decorate my wreaths. A straightforward method to add lace to the cloth wreath is to create segments of the lace and add them around the wreath in various locations. Another suggestion is to construct rosettes or other designs with florals. Glue or bind lengths of fabric around the wreath.
Is This Safe to Hang on the Front Door?
Yes, this wreath is acceptable to display on the front door. Denim is a natural fabric, and it won’t retain moisture as other materials can. This means that it won’t readily get mildewy or damp as other materials can.
I would still recommend that you take it down if there is a severe storm or if you know it will be subjected to a lot of precipitation. But otherwise, it’s entirely fine to hang on the front door.
